For business owners semi-retirement is simply when your business operates just as effectively whether you are there or not.
For career minded professionals it’s a little different. It’s when your compensation is tied to the value you deliver not the number of hours you work and the set out expectations are designed in a way that aligns with your dream.
For both it’s about what you do with the money you earn too.
Why semi retirement?
Well, to quote Austin Powers, Freedom baby… yeah!
In semi-retirement you have so much more freedom. Freedom to continue to contribute through the work you do, to continue to generate substantial revenue, and to live the life and lifestyle you want. If that’s what you want.
What can freedom mean to you?
I am currently helping a client evolve their business so that they and their family can live in Europe, where their spouse is from, for a full year.
What an amazing life experience it will be for their whole family. They’ll connect with family they seldom see. They’ll immerse in a new culture and see a different way of living. Their kids will go to school and make new friends. They’ll travel the region and see so much.
AND… they’ll run their business from there without missing a beat and continuing to make the money they want and need.
Another client of mine wanted to shift from working full time, often including evenings and weekends, to 3 days a week maximum and only a certain number of hours. Why? To be able to spend more time focused on their young kids, especially during their formative elementary age years.
Imagine never again missing those important milestones like first day of grade 1, music recitals, key sports matches, and graduations. Imagine your kids just loving having mom or dad around that much more. Priceless, right?
A third client’s goal of semi-retirement was to have the freedom to spend more time at their southern winter home. It was also to be able to travel more, whether that is locally for extended weekends or further for longer stretches of time.
Everybody has their own vision of the life and lifestyle they want to live. Your dream is your dream and you deserve to live it. It might be one thing now that evolves into something else down the road. But the point is to start living it now.
Waiting for full retirement might be too late. During the great pause of the pandemic we all thought about what we like and don’t like in our working lives.
Many have realized that the stress, fatigue, and burnout just aren’t worth it anymore.
They’ve had the chance to sleep better, eat healthier, and became more active.
They have felt far less stress and became reconnected to the people and things that matter most.
And they liked it!
And now they want more of it.
Often I’ve heard people say things like, life’s too short, I’m burning out, I need to change… I want to change. But in the same breath they go on to express their uncertainty about money and that maybe full “retirement” isn’t the answer.
Maybe, just maybe, semi-retirement is the answer they are looking for. It can deliver both the continuation of business and financial growth AND the lifestyle they now want to live.
How about you?
Does what others are saying resonate with you? Do you also question your financial readiness? To achieve what those three clients of mine are working towards or already living doesn’t happen over night. A very typical mistake so many make is to think they should work harder and work longer well into their 50’s or 60’s and then just stop; retire.
What my clients realized was that, first and foremost, they had a vision of what they wanted and, in addition to that vision, they had the foresight to start early to make it their reality.
Starting in your 30’s or 40’s can allow you to shift easily into semi-retirement so that the rest of your life is fulfilling, meaningful, lucrative, and fun!
It’s all about doing the right things at work BUT ONLY the right things.
