What you are likely doing right now while reading this is killing you!
According to Nilofer Merchant and research she has done we spend 9.3 hours a day on average sitting. Comparatively we only spend 7.7 hours a day on average sleeping. Combined that’s 17 of 24 hours a day being extremely inactive. What about TV time, driving, coffee dates, meals at home, reading the paper, social gatherings, leisure time on social media or online games?
Starting OffThat total is likely much higher, isn’t it?
It has become a societal norm that we don’t question. It just is.
The problem is that our inactive lifestyles of so much sitting has a definitively negative impact on things like being overweight, certain forms of cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Also, an increasing number of people live in constant pain or discomfort because of sitting so much. Excessive sitting is highly linked to poor posture and strain and break down of related soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments, intervertebral discs, and nerves of the back and hips.
Why do we sit so much?
Because we feel we have to for work.
Because of habit at home.
Because technology makes it so easy or seemingly necessary to do.
Because we work so much these days.
Because we’re tired.
We know we need to move more. We know we need to exercise more. Why don’t we?
Well there are many reasons but TIME is one of the most prominent ones. With work demands, family demands, commuting, etc. when is there time?
Take 3 minutes and watch this TED Talk by Nilofer Merchant as she unveils an excellent suggestion, the walking meeting.
When it feels like there is no solution we need to get creative. We need to think outside the box. We need to ask support and do something that may be outside our personal comfort zone.
Once you do it gradually becomes your new normal. A habit ensues as does the benefit.
It’s time to walk the talk and begin to walk and talk!
For years I’ve been walking and talking with many of my coaching clients during our sessions. It’s has been amazing how much focus and clarity can come while moving and talking. Great for me. Great for my clients too. Focus, productive, and healthy too!
Take the first step. Try it with a colleague or client you have a good relationship with and build from there. Plan in advance. Start easy. Build upon your successes. Allow it to become your new normal.
See and feel the benefits as they come!
