Did you know we tend to consume much more than we create?
Are you aware that this is a key trap limiting progression to success in business?
In this post I will share how shifting from consumer to creator can transform your business results.
People can generally be divided into two types; consumers and creators. We have each within us but tend to default towards one.
Consider your life as a whole and specifically your business or career when you think about how you create or consume.
Take a moment and watch this 4 minute video by my coach and mentor Jay Fiset as he clearly explains the concept.
So, if you were to track everything you consume versus everything you create where would you net out? It is a pretty subjective determination, I know, but take a guess.
How is it currently serving you in achieving your goals?
I have found that when you create more there are many more positive spin offs that occur.
Earlier in my career I definitely had a net consumption towards my business and my life and my results reflected it.
One way I consumed was by draining the energy from a business partnership and in other key relationships in my life. I took more than I gave and it showed in the quality of those relationships. Financially I over consumed leading to climbing personal debt and in our business we over consumed growing our debt. It nearly collapsed the company.
In terms of creation for our business I relied on others, namely my partner, to create new clients, to develop relationships with existing clients and grow business with them.
Yes I did create in other areas, however as I look back I see that the net effect was consumption. The net impact on my business and my life was lack of success, financial challenges, and personal distress for far too long.
The WHY behind my net consumption is a much deeper and longer story. Suffice to say that it needed to shift along with my actions so that I could net out in creation and change the results I experienced.
Now I feel I do net out as a creator. Not every day or even every week but overall month by month I now create more than I consume.
I am connecting and creating new and deeper relationships with my community, colleagues, business associates, partners, and prospective clients.
I am continually learning, applying, testing, assessing, and creating new offerings for my community.
I do still consume. We all do. The difference is that I am doing so consciously. More often than not my choices of consumption support my bigger picture vision of my business and my life. At other times I accept the choice in the moment and acknowledge that overall I create more than I consume and affirm what that means.
It means that I am more engaged, more active and progressing in terms of the results I am realizing. I have more energy, more focus, more drive and passion, and more fun in business and generally in my life. I have shifted from from a negative frame of reference and feeling like a victim to a positive frame of reference and feeling in control and alive.
Did my transformation happen over night? No, it did not. But step by step it happened. How it happens for you will be your own journey. The important thing to realize is the benefit you will realize for your business or career and your life by doing so; suddenly or gradually as I did.
What can you do today to create more and consume less? It all starts with a single step!
Remember…
“Life is meant to be embraced, enjoyed and fully lived, not merely endured!”
To your success,
Brent
